Yoke Magazine – For Discerning Yogis

yoke_magazine We came across Yoke Magazine a few months ago. It is an advertising free magazine that appeals to a young and young-at-heart audience, creatives, artists, yogis and food and travel enthusiasts, seeking out inspiration and adventure for a more balanced, happy and creative lifestyle, to empower themselves and at the same time, their community.

The ancient Sanskrit root for yoke is ‘YUJ’ युज् which is the root word of yoga योग. The word yoga means ‘to be yoked’ – the spiritual concept of ‘being yoked’ means to join or connect, to form a bond, to unite.

It is a subscriber-supported, independently produced high-quality eco-friendly print magazine. Published and distributed by YOKE PUBLICATIONS based in Sydney, Australia. The driving force is Cynthia Sciberras.

Cynthia is currently using crowd funding to publish the third edition which is getting released on 3 August 2015. We encourage you to check it out and support Cynthia in her amazing magazine.

When I lived in Sydney, I had a favourite book store in the CBD called Adyar. It was a mind, body, spirit bookshop specialising in metaphysical and alternative books. It had a excellent range of second hand books which I enjoyed browsing. Sadly, it closed a couple of years ago.

Is yoga one of the secrets to longevity - Liveyogalife.comAn article in The Art of Healing magazine explained the benefits of yoga from a very interesting perspective that we had not seen before.

It starts by accepting the scientific perspective that our heart has a set number of beats before it will just stop working. If that is the case, slowing down our breathing oxygenates our blood, meaning that the heart has less work to do.

It goes on to suggest that the yogis understood this principle and so developed more effective ways of breathing. They reduced the amount of toxins that were allowed to enter the bloodstream and practised a host of techniques, from meditation to yoga postures, practices that harmonised the peripheral nervous system and slowed the heart rate.

The article goes onto discuss the three phases of purification of the blood, rebalancing of the nervous system, and rejuvenation’ of the endocrine system.

Beautiful Kundalini yoga teacher Siri Gopal Kaur has compiled this series of seven classes suitable for all levels of ability.

Kundalini Yoga incorporates pranayama (breathwork), mantra (chanting), dynamic movement, mudra and meditative focus to balance your energetic body and fine tune your physical body. Kundalini Yoga is said to be “the mother of all yoga”, the yoga of awareness.

CLASS 4 – Awakening to your 10 Bodies. The ten bodies are: Soul Body, Negative Mind, Positive Mind, Neutral Mind, Physical Body, Arc Line, Auric Body, Pranic Body, Subtle Body, and Radiant Body. This class will support you to clean and rebalance all of our bodies to leave you feeling refreshed and revitalised.

CLASS 5 – Kriya for Morning Sadhana. This class is a beautiful kriya to get your energy moving. It will stretch and strengthen your back, and get the energy moving along your spine. It is an excellent series of postures to do after you wake up in the morning or before bed at night.

CLASS 6 – Kriya for Disease Resistance. This class focuses on building your physical strength, improve your digestion and elimination, strengthening your metabolic balance, and hence building your resistance to disease.

CLASS 7 – Pituitary Gland Series. This class is designed to cleanse and balance the pituitary gland, which is known as the ‘Master Gland’ as it controls the entire glandular system which includes the thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, pancreas and reproductive glands.
