The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz – Introductory Video

Recently I came across an introductory video for a book I first read in 2005 called “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. It was the first book which opened by eyes to how much better I can live my life if I only took some time to get in touch with my inner world and let it guide my actions.

This is the opposite to the method I had been using up to this point which involved trying to find meaning in my life from the outer world. As you can probably tell, trying to find meaning from the chaotic going-ons in the outer world is fraught with problems and is not a good reference point for inner happiness.

In the book, Don Miguel Ruiz reveals that the source of our needless suffering, and which robs us of joy, is our acceptance of self-limiting beliefs. The book outlines and explains how four very simple agreements can signficantly reduce our suffering and bring great joy into our life. These “Four Agreements” are: “Be impeccable with your word”, “Don’t take anything personally”, “Don’t make assumptions” and “Always do your best”.

I highly recommend the book to anyone seeking a better way to live. As a starter check out the introductory video which outlines what the book is about.

Yoga’s many health benefits

We all know from our own experiences the many benefits of practising yoga regularly. So it can as no surprise when I read this article on the health benefits of practising yoga in the Art of Healing magazine providing evidence to support this.

For a great many people the benefits of yoga are obvious in light of its long history of over 5000 years. However in the Western world a higher level of proof is required in the form of randomised, controlled clinical trials before it is fully accepted within the conventional medical system. This is often referred to as the “scientism of medicine”. It largely dismisses anecdotal experience (learning from the experience of others) which is what the majority of the world uses to work out if something has value or is worth doing.

The article outlines a range of areas where yoga has found through trials to be highly effective in treating modern ailments such as:

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Elevated Cortisol (Stress)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Computer Eye Strain

Whether you are wanting relief for an ailment or just want to improve your health and well-being, yoga is an excellent form of exercise.

The benefits of regular meditation

I recently came across an interesting article on meditation in the Art of Healing magazine.

The article highlighted two recent studies that found significant benefits in practising meditation.

1. A new imaging study found that people with no prior meditation experience showed changes in particular brain mechanisms when they participated in a four-day mindfulness meditation program. In particular there was a marked decrease in the presence of anxiety after meditation.

2. A new study published in the Journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes found that the practice of meditation keeps people healthy. The study involved a group of 201 people suffering from coronary heart disease. They had a choice between a health education class or take a course in transcendental meditation. Over a five year period, researchers followed up with both groups and found that those who took the meditation class had a 48 per cent reduction in their symptoms and overall risk of heart attack, stroke and death.
